Spooky Spirits - A Downloadable Game Review

A downloadable game created by Legendo Entertainment AB, the game revolves around two wardens of the NetherWard - a place where all the ghosts are kept -, whose jobs are to guard naughty ghosts and spirits (called Spookies) from frightening human beings. These two wardens are siblings Becky and Tim. Unfortunately, as the story goes, Tim 'accidentally' snoozed away one day and allowed the Spookies to escape, but of course Tim insists he was not sleeping on the job. Now, Becky and Tim have to embark on an adventure in order to recapture the Spookies and bring them back to Netherward.

The Game

The introduction of the game is alluring enough and its context is fairly fresh. Surely the idea of ghost guardians chasing after pesky little spirits is an appeal on its own. Sadly though, the introduction gives us a false sense of gaming adventure, because this is certainly not an adventurist type of game. It is simply like a game of Tetris or Collapse, but with a twist.

Generally, this color-matching-blocks game requires the player to drop colored blocks into the container before any of them reaches the top. There is a catch though. You can't necessarily clear the blocks by just dropping any blocks to a group of matching color blocks. Only blocks that contain the ghostly Spookies can clear the blocks when dropped on them. When that happens, the Spookies will be captured and trapped in another container or the Spookie-tank. If you drop a Spookie-block on blocks of different color, it will not explode and will merely stay there until you drop another block of same color on or next to it.

The objective is to capture as many Spookies as possible. If you fail and the blocks reach to the top, you will get a snickering 'Nice try'. But no worries, you can always replay the level.

Modes

There are, in total, three modes to play from. The first one is the Panic Mode, and is played exactly as explained above, and with a target score that you have to meet before you can move on to the next level.

The second one is the Puzzle Mode, where you must clear all the colored blocks with a limited number of drops. For instance, in level one, you are given a maximum of one drop only. That means you must clear the block by dropping the Spookie-block only once. This takes a bit of thinking, but there is no rush like in Panic Mode.

The last one is Eternity Mode. This is where you want to play to earn high scores and get your name in the reputed Hall of Fame. The speed of the game will increase gradually, and it is played like the Panic Mode, only this time, there is no target score.

Instructions

When you start to play at the start of every mode, there will be a short how-to-play instruction to guide you. The game is simple enough so players will unlikely have any great difficulties in it. In the case where you need help, you can always return to the menu and go to the instructions. The game allows you create a profile at the start so you don't have to worry about having your 'achievements' erased - it will be all saved.

There is one minor glitch though. There is no verbal dictation throughout the game so young children who cannot read properly might find it difficult to understand.

Sound and graphics

The graphics and music are excellent. The first time I saw the characters of Becky and Tim, the only word I could think of was, 'Cute!' The music that accompanies is suitable and creates a fun and exciting atmosphere while still maintaining a bit of spookiness. To complete the ghostly ambience of the game, the cursor also resembles a severed mummified hand (but not a gory one).

This is a fun-loving game and while it might not sustain prolonged attention from the adults, it will sure get the kids hooked up. It is worth a rating of 4/5.

Diablo 3 Game Review

Diablo III has a lot of the same style as its predecessor, Diablo II. It is a role-playing game full of action. It contains destructible environments with damage effects you can see and it incorporates havoc physics using the proprietary engine.

This game is currently still in development. It was veiled at the Blizzard Entertainment Worldwide Invitational on June 28, 2008.

The vision of this game set by developers is the ability to run a wide range of systems. DirectX10 will not be a requirement of this game. There will be a custom 3D game engine and uses an overhead view as seen in previous game series. The 3D environment will also be utilized by enemies where they are able crawl sides of wall from deeper regions of the combat area.

Development:

Diablo III was put into creation in 2005 during the time Blizzard North was still operating. It first had a different artistic design than what was later shown at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational in 2008. It actually went through three different modifications before settling on the final one that was agreed on by the team which consists of fifty people. The game is mostly complete as far as mechanics and physics go. They are just working on minor revisions. Most of the focus will now turn to the game content.

Character Classes:

Want to go to school? Character can attend classes such as Barbarian, Witch Doctor and Wizard. Players can choose a gender for each class, unlike the earlier version. At this time Barbarian is the only class that will be brought back in the release, but other previous classes my come by in future expansions.

Art and Design:

On June 28, 2008, footage of the game was released which included Screenshots and game-play. This stirred up quite a ruckus and three days later many websites reported a petition concerning the art style which was used. Users wanted a "darker and more realistic" feel to the game. In the petition there were references to the similarities of Diablo III and World of Warcraft games. Including the alleged lack of "light radius" from former games, the "colorful cartoon-like" visuals and "out-of-proportion" character figures as well as armor.

Blizzard released a promotional video depicting what the game would look like with proposed changes on September 11, 2008.

Jay Wilson who is the lead designer later commented on fan altered screen shots that were used as examples. He stated in terms of texturing, where they grayed out everything and created a flat look, causing all monsters to take on a similar tone, which it does not play well. It would be boring to play more than just a couple times, which is not something that would work for them. He also stated in terms of a 3D engine, that it is almost impossible because you cannot get lighting that smart and able to run on reasonable systems. If possible they would do that with a few of the dungeons.

Downloadable Game Review: Chuzzle Deluxe

Chuzzle brings a surprising combination of 80s arcade style with the standout flops of the 70s: shag carpet and disco. Like many puzzle casual games of recent (including Bejeweled, Zuma and Cubis), the aim of the game here is to create chains of three or more in an attempt to clear the board or advance levels. Only, in Chuzzle, instead of grouping jewels, blocks or orbs, we are grouping what can only be described as cute little shag carpet hairballs with eyes (apparently named “chuzzles”)!

We are taken right into her quest as a restaurateur as Flo herself; an energetic, enthusiastic owner who fulfills every role from hostess to server, bartender and busboy (thankfully, cooking is provided by a overworked dark figure behind the counter).

Chuzzle provides several game modes including classic (what we’re used to playing), Speed (where you must make a combo every few seconds in order to continue on), Zen and Mind Bender. All modes seem to be endless, as after an hour I reach level 24 with no end in site (and officially, as far as we know, there is no limit).

The sound track is particularly interesting and unique. It’s a disco-techno feel beat with, what I swear, is the Aflac duck quacking to the music (think John Travolta meets Donald Duck)!

However, the best part (by far) is the inclusion of trophies. Several dozen trophies are available in the Trophy Room for all types of achievements ranging from “Triple Combo” to “Speed Freak” to “Chuzzle Bingo”. This feature, along with the morphine-like, hour wasting addicting gameplay (customary for PopCap games) delivers more then enough excitement time and time again to warrant full version purchase: one hour is not enough, I must pop more shag carpet hairballs!

Navigation

Thanks to obvious special consideration, PopCap has come up with a sliding row/column grid navigation which proves easy-to-use and yet allows challenging gameplay. Players slide rows and columns of chuzzles left and right or up and down in order to line up combinations which record themselves (over half of my combo’s when playing came from accidental lineups recorded while attempting another, more obvious, lineup).

Ease of Use

Regarding ease of use, the navigation and gameplay are self explanatory at the get-go. And just in case you find yourself a little clueless as to where to begin, PopCap has included many tutorial and in-game assistance tips to aid you along the way. Additionally, in exchange for a hit in points, hints are available to get you out of those “what the heck do I do now?” moments.

Playability

With dozens of trophies, multiple, very challenging game modes, and tons twists and quirks along the way, Chuzzle is one of the few casual games that seems to never get old or boring! It kind of reminds me of the old commercial with the tagline “once you pop, you can’t stop!” To sum up…

MUST POP MORE SHAG CARPET HAIRBALLS!

Full Version Features

The free trial include unrestricted access and allows 60 minutes of gameplay. Enough to get you started and on your way at least one game mode as well as time to try out the other three. The full version allows you to feed your addiction (you’ll see what I mean when your trial expires).

Pros/Cons

Pros:

  • Very addicting
  • Doesn't get old or boring
  • Seemingly unending
  • Easy to use, navigate

Cons:

  • No multiple player support

Bottom Line

I never thought popping little shag carpet hairballs with eyes could bring so much excitement and satisfaction… but it does! This game never gets old, boring, and seems to never end! The inclusion of trophies for particular achievements catapults this arcade/puzzle game above the traditional Bejeweled, Zuma and Cubis. My #1 Puzzle Game of the Year!

James Cameron's Dark Angel: The Video Game Review for Playstation 2 (PS2) and XBox

The pathetic attempt to create a Dark Angel video game ended in unparalleled disaster. This game made a mockery of the once popular television series, basically rubbing the fans faces in the dirt. If you can’t do it right then don’t do it at all. This was one of the least imaginative games that I have ever seen and truth be told I could have more fun playing an old odyssey game than this crap. The Dark Angel series may have been canceled and public interest for anything Dark Angel may have been slim, but that is no excuse for this kind of debasement.

There is basically no story line going on here, Max attempts to rescue her siblings with the help of Logan Cale, blah, blah, blah. What else is new? The dialogue between the character Max played by Jessica Alba and the character Logan played by Michael Wheatherly sounded less like people than something robotic. I know they can do better than that so what’s the problem here? There is no excuse for doing a half-ass job have some self-respect this is your career.

The graphics for the game were horrendous, the same cop cars and trash cans will show up in nearly every section. You can’t tell one section from the next because they reuse all of the same graphics. The graffiti looks the same on each of the walls, the characters all look the same, but with different gear on. Max and Logan look similar to the actor and actress that played them, but Original Cindy doesn’t even come close. The boss characters, Beetle, Gecko, Bear, and Stingray (how original) are the most pathetic things ever to appear in a video game.

The gameplay has a rigid feel to it, there is a set path to follow with no room for deviations. The character Max must find a way to get past each section by either using a keycard that she gets from killing a guard or setting something up to explode. If Max is detected by the guards a timer begins and you have only minutes to kill every bad guy you see before it is game over for you; this is the most difficult part of the game. Max has a few moves that they have given her, but they are the same moves that she uses throughout the entire game and they aren’t even that good. Logan pipes in from time to time to let Max know what’s going on around her, usually at the beginning of each section, but sometimes in the middle of a battle which throws you off.

The camera for Dark Angel gets caught in walls or you can’t see down when you are on a second story to see if there are any bad guys down there, not that if they fixed it it would make much difference in how well received the game was. There was just not much fun in playing this game, it would have been a hit when the first Nintendo game came out, but video games have progressed so much farther since then. If you are a fan of the Dark Angel series your best bet is to buy the boxed set and the books; playing this will just let you know how far it fell when people stopped watching it.
